Today was formal day aboard the ship... after another day spent lazing in front of the pool drinking cocktails we all put on our suits and ties and went to the Captain's Welcome Dinner, followed by a dancing show. The Captain had been telling us of the 'Smily Face' Occultation that was going to occur tonight after 8pm, but we really didn't believe him... until we slipped outside to see for ourselves.. .and yes.. he was not kidding. Venus and Jupiter made up the face's two eyes, while the smile was the moons 1st quarter...
Capturing this scene from a moving ship proved a little beyond sensible.. the longer I kept the shutter open for the more blurred the scene got, so I was forced to use a very high and noisy ISO.. 3200 in the end. This still blew out the moon, so I took another shot with correct exposure and composited picture together. In the end the picture resembles fairly much what we saw (except for all the noise)
We spend the day tomorrow in Noumea!! ... probably wont have much time over next 4 days to keep up with coments/contacts so will catch up later!!
